The film industry, especially its technical departments, has traditionally seen fewer women rise to prominence. Jaya emerged as a prominent female director who delighted audiences with her work. Starting her career as a journalist, Jaya transitioned to filmmaking, where she carved out a unique space for herself. B. Jaya was born on January 11, 1964, in Ravulapalem, East Godavari district. A bright student, she completed her MA in English Literature and a Diploma in Journalism from Chennai University, along with an MA in Psychology from Annamalai University. With her impressive academic background, Jaya began her career as a film journalist with Andhra Jyoti Daily and later worked with The Indian Express. Her straightforwardness and bold opinions earned her recognition and respect in the field of journalism.
Jaya's articles, known for their clarity and depth, garnered attention in the industry, eventually leading her to explore filmmaking. She married BA Raju, a celebrated film journalist and PRO, and the couple became a dynamic duo in the Telugu film industry. Together, they founded Superhit Film Weekly in 1994, which became the leading film magazine of its time. Their commitment ensured that the weekly never missed an issue, reflecting their dedication to their work.
Jaya’s passion for cinema and storytelling led her to filmmaking. With her husband's encouragement, she co-produced Premalo Pavani Kalyan under the Superhit Friends banner, where she served as Direction Supervisor. Her directorial debut, Chantigadu, was a resounding success, running for 100 days in 25 centers.
Subsequent films like Premikulu, Gundammagari Manavadu, Savaal, Lovely, and Vaisakham showcased her versatility and storytelling skills. These films not only entertained audiences but also cemented her reputation as one of the most successful female directors in Telugu cinema, following the legacy of Bhanumathi and Vijayanirmala.
