Shambhala Stands Apart from the Crowd; Strong Pre-Release Business Keeps Us Financially Secure: Producers
Versatile actor Aadi Saikumar headlines Shambhala, a distinctive horror entertainer produced by Rajashekhar Annabhimoju and Mahidhar Reddy under the Shining Pictures banner. Directed by Ugandhar Muni, the film features Archana Iyer, Swasika, Ravi Varma, Madhunandan, and Shiva Karthik in pivotal roles, with music composed by Sricharan Pakala.
Ever since the teaser and trailer dropped, Shambhala has generated strong curiosity and buzz among audiences. The film is gearing up for a grand theatrical release on December 25. Ahead of the release, the producers interacted with the media and spoke candidly about the film’s journey, confidence, and business prospects.
What made you say yes to Shambhala?
Even before hearing the full script, the core story itself impressed us deeply. The way devotional elements are blended with horror felt fresh and instantly engaging. That unique mix convinced us to greenlight the project without hesitation. We initially planned a different film with Aadi Saikumar, but once Shambhala came to us, we felt this story deserved to be made with him.
How did the film’s budget evolve?
We began the project on a moderate budget, not anticipating this level of attention initially. As the film progressed and our confidence in the content grew, we decided to increase the budget to enhance production quality. We truly believed in the story and didn’t want to compromise on execution.
How safe is the project financially right now?
We are in a very safe zone. Around 80 percent of the investment has already been recovered through satellite and OTT deals. The remaining recovery will come from theatrical revenues, and we are confident the film will move into profits.
Aadi Saikumar has a market beyond Telugu. How has that helped?
Aadi enjoys good recognition in both Telugu and Hindi markets, and Shambhala has received strong offers as well. We are planning a Hindi theatrical release, likely within a week of the Telugu version.
Tell us about your background in cinema.
We have been associated with the film industry for several years. In the past, we handled video and DVD rights for major films and also worked as overseas distributors, which gave us strong exposure to film business dynamics.
Your thoughts on director Ugandhar Muni?
Ugandhar Muni’s storytelling and short-film background are his biggest strengths. We’ve already seen the final output on the big screen, and it’s extremely impressive. After completing the first two schedules, the entire team gained immense confidence. He has delivered a well-balanced film with all the right ingredients.
How strong is the content?
Content-wise, Shambhala is completely different from any other film. There’s no comparison it stands in its own space. The story itself is the film’s biggest strength.
How important is Sricharan Pakala’s music?
Sricharan Pakala’s background score is a major asset. It elevates the visuals and perfectly supports the film’s horror and emotional layers.
Why the title Shambhala?
After Kalki, the word Shambhala has become familiar to many audiences. But it carries a deep philosophical meaning. What Shambhala represents, its significance, and its connection to the story are all explored in this film.
What makes Shambhala special compared to other films?
The film blends horror, suspense, and emotion seamlessly. With Mythri Movie Makers releasing it, the response has been very encouraging. Importantly, every character has significance not just the hero or heroines.
Is there a possibility of a sequel?
The first part has a complete and satisfying conclusion, but we’ve left a small hint that could open doors for a sequel. We’ll decide on that based on audience response.
How was the OTT and satellite business?
The OTT and satellite rights were locked even before release, thanks to strong demand. After watching the film, Aha acquired the OTT rights. On the theatrical front, Mythri Movie Makers picked up the Nizam rights, while Usha Pictures acquired the AP and Ceded territories.
What’s next from you?
We plan to move forward with selective films and will continue our involvement in film distribution, choosing projects with strong and unique content.
With a confident team, strong pre-release business, and a concept that promises something truly different, Shambhala is poised to make a strong impact when it hits theatres this December 25.
