National crush Rashmika Mandanna and talented actor Dheekshith Shetty come together for The Girlfriend a heartfelt and emotional love story directed by Rahul Ravindran. Presented by Allu Aravind and jointly produced by Geetha Arts and Dheeraj Mogilineni Entertainment, the film is already generating strong buzz ahead of its release.
Set for a grand theatrical release worldwide in Hindi and Telugu on November 7, followed by Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada on November 14 the makers are confident that this story will connect with audiences across languages.
In an exclusive conversation, producers Dheeraj Mogilineni and Vidya Koppineedi opened up about their journey with the film, their vision, and what makes The Girlfriend so special.
Dheeraj Mogilineni on Taking Creative Risks and Choosing the Right Story
During the lockdown, when theaters were shut, we were developing this story. From day one, we knew this was a film meant for the big screen, shares Dheeraj. As producers, we always look for commercial potential, but this story moved us so deeply that we were ready to take the risk purely out of love for the content.
He further adds,
Vidya and I share an excellent rapport every creative and production decision was made together. The Girlfriend is told entirely from the female perspective, which gives it a unique voice. We didn’t chase big stars; we wanted authentic performers. Dheekshith fit the role perfectly. Once audiences see the film, they’ll understand why he was the right choice.
Dheeraj also confirmed that the team is self-distributing the film, believing in its strong theatrical appeal.
We didn’t cast Dheekshith for his Kannada fan base it was purely a creative call. But with Rashmika and Dheekshith together, the film naturally gains pan-India reach.
He continued,
Rahul Ravindran impressed us with his clarity and conviction. We didn’t judge him by his previous work; this story alone convinced us. Rashmika’s dedication was unbelievable she even waived her remuneration initially, and out of gratitude, we’re compensating her double now.
Speaking about Anu Emmanuel’s role, he says,
It’s more than a cameo her character adds real value to the story. What we envisioned while greenlighting this film is exactly what we see on screen today. That’s rare, and it’s why we’re calm and confident ahead of release.
With premieres being planned a few days before the release and strong support from Geetha Arts, Dheeraj concludes,
Post-COVID, audiences have shown that they come to theaters only for solid stories. The Girlfriend is exactly that kind of film real, emotional, and cinematic. Once it releases, we’ll soon announce our next project.
Vidya Koppineedi on the Emotional Core and Team Spirit
When we first heard Rahul’s narration, we instantly felt connected, says Vidya. This isn’t a regular commercial film it’s a story with heart. Every person who watches it will carry something back with them. Even the censor board members were deeply moved and said it’s the kind of film that could win a National Award.
She continues,
Dheeraj and I share equal responsibilities on every project. All major calls are taken together, and with Allu Aravind garu’s guidance, we always feel confident in our choices.
Vidya explains that The Girlfriend isn’t a women-centric story by design, but a love story that organically unfolds through the heroine’s point of view.
It’s a fresh, emotional narrative that reflects real-life experiences. We shot most of it in a college setting managing Rashmika’s dates was challenging because she was juggling multiple projects, but the process was smooth overall.
Talking about the music, Vidya praises composer Hesham Abdul Wahab:
From the very beginning, we knew Hesham was the right choice. He’s created a beautiful soundtrack four full songs and two bit tracks that perfectly complement the film’s emotion.
She adds,
We never approached Samantha for this project Rashmika was our first and only choice. She instantly fell in love with the story and brought it to life beautifully. In today’s era, we carefully pick stories that emotionally connect, and The Girlfriend is one such film.
With a strong emotional base, heartfelt performances, and a realistic portrayal of love, The Girlfriend promises to be more than just a romantic film it’s a mirror to real emotions and relationships.
Releasing worldwide on November 7 (Hindi & Telugu) and November 14 (Tamil, Malayalam & Kannada)
