Hesham Abdul Wahab on The Girlfriend

Hesham Abdul Wahab: “The emotional conflict in ‘The Girlfriend’ inspired my music”

“The Girlfriend,” starring national crush Rashmika Mandanna and Dheekshith Shetty, is an intense emotional love story directed by Rahul Ravindran. The film is produced by Dheeraj Mogilineni and Vidya Koppineedi, with Allu Aravind presenting it under Geetha Arts and Dheeraj Mogilineni Entertainment. It will release in Telugu and Hindi on November 7, followed by Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada on November 14.

In a recent chat, music director Hesham Abdul Wahab opened up about his experience working on the film:

“The Girlfriend was actually the first Telugu movie I signed. Later, I worked on Kushi and Hi Nanna, but this film has a deeper emotional intensity than both. I’m glad I could contribute to such strong romantic stories.”

Speaking about the film’s music journey, Hesham said:

“The release was delayed, and during that time, Prashanth Vihari took over the background score. I’m genuinely happy with his work he captured the emotion I had envisioned.”

The film features four songs, with the recently released ‘Needhey’ holding special meaning for Hesham.

“Director Rahul wanted it to be a song that every girl connects with a ‘Bhooma anthem.’ I gave my best to make it powerful. For the whole album, we mixed Indian classical ragas with Western elements to give a unique sound.”

Hesham shared that the emotional tension between the lead characters, Vikram and Bhooma, was his biggest inspiration.

“Their relationship inspired the entire album. Every song fits perfectly into the story thanks to Rahul’s vision.”

On his creative process, Hesham said:

“There’s no fixed time for me to compose. Inspiration can strike anytime. I’ve always admired A.R. Rahman I grew up learning his songs. Singing my Hi Nanna tracks live at the IIFA in front of him was unforgettable.”

Hesham, who started as a singer before turning composer, added:

“Directors often ask me to sing my own songs. I’ve even sung for other composers in films like Mass Jathara and Kannappa. These experiences helped me understand Telugu better.”

Talking about his future, he shared:

“I’ve mostly done love songs so far, but I’m ready to explore mass and upbeat tracks next. I’m currently working on films with Anand Deverakonda and Vaishnavi, and also planning my first Bollywood project. Telugu cinema has given me incredible opportunities, and I’m grateful for that.”

A heartfelt creator with a soulful touch Hesham Abdul Wahab continues to make music that speaks to the heart.
