Dheekshith Shetty on ‘The Girlfriend’: A story that mirrors real life

The Girlfriend is a story everyone will see themselves in it’s the best film of my career so far: Dheekshith Shetty

The Girlfriend, starring National Crush Rashmika Mandanna and talented actor Dheekshith Shetty, is gearing up for a grand worldwide theatrical release hitting screens in Hindi and Telugu on November 7, followed by Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada releases on November 14.

Produced by Dheeraj Mogilineni and Vidya Koppineedi under Geetha Arts and Dheeraj Mogilineni Entertainment, with presentation by Allu Aravind, the film is written and directed by Rahul Ravindran. Promising an emotional, thought-provoking take on love and relationships, “The Girlfriend” is already being hailed as a refreshing addition to modern cinema.

In a candid conversation, actor Dheekshith Shetty opened up about his role, working with Rashmika, and what makes this film truly special to him.

This story found me at the right time

After Dasara, I was looking for a story that felt close to real life. That’s when Rahul Ravindran approached me for The Girlfriend. He mentioned Rashmika was playing the female lead and that he had me in mind for the boyfriend’s role. He had seen some of my interviews during Dasara promotions and felt I was perfect for this character.

Once I read the script, I understood what he saw in me. I’ve worked in multiple industries Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam but stories like this don’t come often. It’s raw, emotional, and incredibly real. I knew instantly that I wanted to be part of it.

Vikram isn’t toxic he’s human

Rahul had absolute clarity about how Vikram should come across from his expressions and behavior to the smallest details of his speech. That made my job easier.

Some might think Vikram is a toxic boyfriend after watching the trailer, but Rahul made sure we never crossed that line. He’s a layered character imperfect but relatable. My theater and film school background helped me prepare deeply for him. For me, a story has to connect personally; that’s when it truly matters.

This film will stay with you

Love stories are usually told in a familiar way, but The Girlfriend looks at relationships differently. It’s not just entertainment it’s a reflection of life. Some films end when the credits roll, but this one stays with you.

Rashmika once said that if she had seen a movie like this a few years ago, her perspective on life might have been different. I completely agree. People between 18 and 25, especially, will take away something meaningful from this story.”

Rashmika has outdone herself

Watching Rashmika perform was inspiring. No one else could’ve brought Bhuma to life like she did. During the shoot, Animal had just released and become a massive success, but she remained humble, grounded, and warm with everyone. On screen, you won’t see Rashmika you’ll only see Bhuma.

Families will connect too

This isn’t just a youth-centric love story. It has strong family emotions too. When we talk about toxic relationships, people often imagine smoking, drinking, or anger issues but toxicity can exist in more subtle ways, and this film explores that. I haven’t seen a character like Vikram in any love story before.

Rahul Ravindran deserves full credit. He’s not just a talented director but also a genuinely kind person. He never raised his voice or pressured anyone on set yet got the best out of everyone.

Allu Aravind Garu’s appreciation meant the world

One of my most memorable moments was when Allu Aravind Garu called me after watching the rushes. I was nervous, expecting criticism but instead, he appreciated my performance and even gave me an advance for my next film. That confidence boost meant everything to me.

The Girlfriend is the best work of my career

I’m getting great opportunities in Telugu cinema, and I believe Telugu audiences truly value performance over language. Producers Dheeraj and Vidya gave us complete creative support.

Hesham’s music is a big highlight my favorite track is Em Jarugutundi. Honestly, The Girlfriend is the most fulfilling project of my career so far.

What’s next for Dheekshith Shetty

My Kannada film Bank of Bhagyalakshmi will release in Telugu on November 21. I’m also working on a Telugu film titled Shabana, another project KJQ, and one more untitled film. Apart from that, I’m acting alongside Shiva Rajkumar in Kannada and Angel No.1 in Malayalam. I also have a Tamil project currently in production.

The Girlfriend promises to be more than just another love story it’s an emotional journey that mirrors real life, told through honest performances and heartfelt storytelling.
