Performances:
Nandu delivers a career-best performance, effortlessly slipping into the skin of an obsessive and psychologically unstable husband. His intense portrayal creates a sense of discomfort and fear, making the character deeply impactful on screen.
Avika Gor handles her emotionally layered role with maturity and conviction, expressing her character’s suffering and helplessness in a highly believable manner throughout the narrative.
Sivaji Raja does justice to his supporting role with a composed performance, adding value whenever he appears. Raviteja Mahadasyam is adequate as the calm and understanding lover, fitting naturally into the storyline. Meanwhile, Pragnya Nayan makes her presence felt strongly in the latter half, especially during the climax episodes where she appears as a determined police officer.
Technical Aspects:
Director Pranava Swaroop presents the film with a raw and grounded narrative style, giving the emotional conflicts a believable impact. His handling of sensitive themes, especially marital consent and psychological trauma, adds a meaningful layer to the story. While the narrative slightly slows down in parts of the first half, he succeeds in keeping the emotional intensity intact and delivers a much stronger and gripping second half.
Producer Riya Jiya deserves appreciation for backing a bold subject with sincerity and maintaining quality throughout the project. The film looks visually rich despite its limited scale, reflecting solid production planning and execution.
Sri Sai Kumar Dhara’s cinematography is one of the film’s major strengths, capturing the dark emotional tone with striking visuals and effective lighting patterns. Shravan Bharadwaj’s background score further elevates the tension-filled moments and supports the emotional depth of the narrative effectively.
Verdict:
‘Ugly Story’ attempts to explore the darker side of relationships by blending psychological drama with an emotionally driven storyline centered around obsession, control, and consent within marriage. Although the narrative takes time to settle in during the initial portions, the film gradually picks up momentum and delivers a more gripping and emotionally charged second half. Nandu steals the show with a deeply committed performance that adds weight to the film’s intense mood. For viewers who prefer hard-hitting emotional dramas with serious themes, the movie offers a reasonably engaging experience.
