Kodamasimham Re-Releases in 4K: Chiranjeevi Shares Heartfelt Memories

Kodamasimham is a favourite film for both me and Ram Charan. Audiences will surely enjoy this re-release– Megastar Chiranjeevi

Kodamasimham remains one of the most unique hits in Megastar Chiranjeevi’s career. Released on August 9, 1990, it is the only cowboy film he ever acted in. Now, Rama Films head Kaikala Nageswara Rao is bringing the film back to theatres on the 21st of this month with a brand-new 4K restoration and 5.1 digital sound. A press premiere and media meet were held in Hyderabad, where Chiranjeevi shared his memories through a special video message.

Chiranjeevi recalled, “One of my most iconic photos is from Kodamasimham. The producers gifted me a framed version, and it still hangs in my house. I always loved cowboy filmsClint Eastwood, Gregory Peck, Omar Sharif were my favourites. I never imagined I’d get to act in a cowboy film myself. After Krishna garu’s blockbuster Mosagallaku Mosagadu, attempting this genre again was a big challenge. When Rama Films Nageswara Rao garu and director Muralimohan Rao garu narrated the story, I immediately said yes.”

He shared several fond memoriesfrom growing a beard for the first time to praising Mohan Babu’s unforgettable ‘Sudigali’ role, Pran’s powerful villainy, and the massive cast. Chiranjeevi also revealed that the famous camera trick in the “Japam Japam” songwhere he moves from the floor to the wallwas achieved with innovative in-house technology long before Hollywood used a similar shot in Inception.

He added, “Kodamasimham is close to my heart, but it is even more special for Ram Charan. As a child, he wouldn’t eat unless this film’s cassette was played. I’m happy the new generation will get to experience our cowboy attempt, the dances, fights, and the scale on which we made the film. My best wishes to Nageswara Rao garu. I’m sure audiences will enjoy watching it again on the 21st.”

Producer Kaikala Nageswara Rao said the team preserved the film’s original negative carefully, which made the 4K restoration possible. He shared that although Chiranjeevi was shooting multiple films at onceincluding Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundarihe maintained the cowboy look with complete dedication. The producer also highlighted the film’s massive scale, shot across five states with a huge star cast, and completed in just 96 days. He credited Paruchuri Brothers and Satyamand for strengthening the screenplay and dialogues.

Director Muralimohan Rao said Kodamasimham remains a cherished memory thanks to Chiranjeevi’s dedication and the teamwork of the cast and crew. He hoped the re-release would recreate the same magic.

Writer Satyanand expressed that cowboy films are rare opportunities for writers, and Kodamasimham was a proud milestone in Chiranjeevi’s career.

Music director Koti emotionally remembered his late partner Raj and said they poured their passion into the soundtrack, giving the film a memorable musical identity.

Writer Paruchuri Gopalakrishna recalled strengthening the second half along with Vijayendra Prasad and others, and praised Chiranjeevi for perfectly carrying a genre that was new to Telugu audiences at the time.
