Shruti Haasan Makes a Global Impact with "The Eye" – Trailer Out Now!
Acclaimed actress and musician Shruti Haasan is making her international debut as a female lead in the highly anticipated British psychological thriller, The Eye. Directed by Daphne Schmon, the film is set to have its Indian premiere on February 27th as the opening feature at the 5th Wench Film Festival in Mumbai. Recognized as one of India’s leading festivals for horror, sci-fi, and fantasy films, Wench Film Festival provides a fitting platform for this gripping thriller.
The Eye follows the story of Diana (Shruti Haasan), who travels to a remote island to scatter the ashes of her husband Felix (Mark Rowley), who tragically drowned. However, her journey of grief takes a chilling turn when she uncovers the mysterious 'Evil Eye' ritual—an ancient tradition that could bring Felix back but at a disturbing cost.
Shot on location in Athens and Corfu, the film’s breathtaking Greek landscapes heighten its eerie and suspenseful atmosphere. Following its debut at the London Independent Film Festival in 2023 and a feature at the Greek International Film Festival, The Eye continues to gain global recognition.
Expressing her excitement about the film’s Indian premiere, Shruti Haasan shared, "Psychological thrillers have always fascinated me, and being part of a story that delves deep into human emotions, grief, and the supernatural is truly thrilling. Besides its compelling narrative and high production quality, what makes this project even more special is that it was created under an all-women-led production house. Supporting women in the film industry is something I deeply believe in. Additionally, this film champions sustainability in filmmaking, which is crucial for the future of storytelling. We must create with awareness of our impact on the world."
Director Daphne Schmon spoke highly of Shruti’s performance, stating, "The Eye is both a love letter to Corfu, where my family is from, and a deep exploration of grief’s dark psychological aspects. The role demanded an actor who could bring emotional depth and complexity, and Shruti Haasan was the perfect choice. Her portrayal of Diana’s grief, paranoia, and resilience is incredibly authentic. Only an artist of her calibre could have done justice to this role, and her performance will leave a lasting impact."
With an all-female creative and production team, The Eye also stands out as the first film in Greece made with a strong focus on sustainability.
The film also stars Mark Rowley, Linda Marlowe, Anna Savva, Christos Stergioglou, and Elpida Stathatou. Written by Emily Carlton and produced by Melanie Dicks, The Eye is set for a theatrical release later this year.
