Directors Are My Mentors: Music Director Ajay Arasada

"My aunt and sisters used to play the veena at home. Watching them closely from a young age sparked my interest in music, which grew stronger over time," says Ajay Arasada, the music director for the periodical web series Vikkatakavi. Streaming on ZEE5 from November 28, Vikkatakavi has been capturing the audience's imagination with its unique storytelling and music. In a recent interview, Ajay shared insights into his journey, his inspirations, and his creative process.
"Directors have been my greatest mentors in music. Each project introduces me to a fresh perspective. Collaborating with directors pushes me to explore new dimensions of music," Ajay remarks. Talking about Vikkatakavi, he explained, "Creating music for a periodical series was a unique challenge. We composed tracks that transport viewers to a bygone era, evoking nostalgia and enchantment."
About Background
Born and raised in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Ajay pursued engineering at GITAM University. From 2011 to 2018, he worked as a software engineer at TCS before taking a leap of faith to pursue his passion for music. “My family supported me immensely during this transition,” he shares.
Entry to Musical World
Ajay credits his early exposure to music at home for igniting his interest. "My aunts and sisters played the veena, and I observed them keenly. That curiosity turned into a passion, and I began learning music naturally. Initially, I wanted to learn the guitar, so I trained with Sharath Master for two and a half months. Later, I taught myself by practicing independently."
During his engineering days, Ajay immersed himself in music, often skipping classes to play. Joining music bands during this period further honed his skills and deepened his love for music.
Stepping into the Film Industry
While working as a software engineer, Ajay simultaneously composed music for short films, which became a valuable training ground. "Pradeep Advaith introduced me to director Pradeep, who offered me my first opportunity in Jagannatakam after hearing a 30-second composition I had created. That marked my entry into the film industry," Ajay recalls.
Later, his childhood friend and renowned music director Sricharan Pakala invited him to contribute keyboard programming for the film Goodachari. This collaboration opened doors to more projects, including Ksheera Sagara Mathanam, Nede Vidudala, Missing, Sriranganeethulu, and the web series Save the Tigers (Seasons 1 & 2).
About Aay Project
Ajay got his big break in Aay through producer Bunny Vas, who admired his background score for Missing. "Bunny Vas approached me at an event and asked me to compose two songs for Aay: Ammalalo Ram Bhajan and an item number. After delivering those, I was entrusted with the entire soundtrack and background score for the movie. Working on a comedy film was challenging, but seeing the film succeed made all the hard work worthwhile."
Composing for Vikkatakavi
Ajay describes Vikatakavi as a fulfilling experience. "Director Pradeep Maddali had a clear vision, which made my work smoother. Since the series is set in a historical period, the music required a distinctive approach. I composed for three episodes of the series while working on Aay and completed the rest post its release."
Ajay emphasizes his adaptability: "As a technician, my priority is delivering what the directors envision, whether it’s for a film or a web series."
Favorite Music Directors and Future Projects
Ajay cites Devi Sri Prasad as his greatest inspiration. "His work constantly motivates me," he says.
Looking ahead, Ajay is working on Three Roses Season 2 and two other web series for Aha. "I’m also in discussions for a few movie projects, and I’ll share details soon," he teases.
From a software engineer to a celebrated music director, Ajay Arasada’s journey showcases passion, perseverance, and an unyielding dedication to his craft.
