GV Prakash on Kingston: "A Unique Cinematic Experience Like Baahubali and Kantara
Music director-turned-actor GV Prakash Kumar is stepping into a new role as a producer with his latest film, Kingston. Made in collaboration with Zee Studios under his banner, Parallel Universe Pictures, the film is set to hit theaters in both Telugu and Tamil on March 7. Maheswara Reddy, head of Ganga Entertainments, is bringing the film to Telugu audiences.
As part of the promotions, GV Prakash was in Hyderabad for a media interaction, where he shared exciting details about the film.
On stepping into production:
"I always had plans to produce films, but Kingston truly inspired me to take the plunge. It’s India’s first-ever sea adventure thriller, and I’m proud to have brought this unique story to life. We also have plans to expand it into a franchise there are already four stories lined up!"
What is Kingston about?
Set in a coastal village, the film follows a fisherman, played by GV Prakash himself. In this village, no one dares to venture into the sea due to a deadly curse. However, the protagonist decides to challenge fate, embarking on a perilous journey into the ocean. "What happens next is something never seen before in Indian cinema he encounters zombies and spirits, making for a thrilling adventure."
About Underwater challenges:
For the film's demanding underwater sequences, GV Prakash underwent intensive training. "I had to hold my breath for up to three minutes at a time. Performing action sequences while submerged was extremely challenging, especially when retakes were needed."
Most physically demanding film yet:
Without a doubt, Kingston pushed him to his physical limits. "Shooting on a ship was tough the deck was always wet and slippery. I got injured multiple times but kept going. Despite the challenges, the action sequences have turned out spectacular!
Technical innovations:
A film like this has never been attempted in India. We did extensive test shoots with cinematographer Nirav Shah before Gokul Benoy took over. Since much of the film happens at sea, we had to coordinate from separate boats, and we also built miniature sets for certain sequences. Once Kingston is out, even Hollywood will be surprised by how we achieved it!"
On working with Divya Bharathi again:
Having previously collaborated with Divya Bharathi in Bachelor, GV Prakash was thrilled to work with her again. "Zee Studios suggested her name, and she was the perfect fit. She’s even performed action sequences in this film, and I believe Kingston will be a breakthrough for her."
Composing for Kingston
Known for scoring his own films, GV Prakash took a fresh approach to Kingston. "Some say I give my best music to films where I’m not the lead, but for me, it’s always about the story. Since this is an Indian sea adventure film, I didn’t want to reference Pirates of the Caribbean or Harry Potter. Instead, I created an original soundscape that blends fantasy and folklore
Balancing acting and music:
It feels great to have completed 25 films as an actor and 100 as a composer! I maintain a strict schedule, ensuring I have enough time for both. Even when things get hectic, I always have a Plan B to keep everything on track.
Producing for others?
I'm open to producing films with other actors. In fact, after Kingston, I'm producing a film directed by Selvaraghavan. I loved the script and immediately wanted to back it. For me, it's about the story, not just starring in the film.
Acting in Telugu films?
"I’d love to! I was actually offered a role in Dasara (not Nani’s character), but I couldn’t adjust my dates. If the right opportunity comes, I’m definitely interested.
Baahubali transported us into a grand mythical world, and Kantara immersed us in deep-rooted traditions. Kingston will take you on an entirely new cinematic journey one that brings our ancestral legends to life. It’s a film unlike anything Indian cinema has ever seen!
