Aakanksha Singh on Shaashtipoorthi: A Role That Touched My Heart

Shaashtipoorthi felt like an acting masterclass – Actress Aakanksha Singh on her return to Telugu cinema

Actress Aakanksha Singh opens up about her role in Shaashtipoorthi, working with Rajendra Prasad, filming in Rajahmundry, and her return to Telugu cinema with a performance-packed family drama.

Aakanksha Singh, known for her impactful performances in Malli Raava, Devadas, and Parampara, is back on the Telugu silver screen with the upcoming film Shaashtipoorthi. The film, headlined by veteran actors Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Archana, also features Rupesh and Aakanksha in pivotal roles. Directed by Pawan Prabha and produced under the MAA AAIE Productions banner by Rupesh, the movie is all set for a theatrical release on the 30th of this month. With its songs, teaser, and trailer already receiving positive buzz, the film is generating high expectations among audiences.

As part of the promotional campaign, Aakanksha recently interacted with the media and shared her experience working on Shaashtipoorthi. Here are the highlights from her conversation:

Returning to Telugu screens after a break

“It’s been a while since my last Telugu project, largely due to the pandemic which disrupted many plans. Meet Cute, which was supposed to release in theatres, eventually came out on OTT. But now I’m excited that Shaashtipoorthi is getting a proper theatrical release. It’s a beautiful film, rich in emotions and technically well-crafted. And Ilaiyaraaja sir’s music is simply magical – it will surely touch hearts.”

On playing the role of Janaki

“In this film, I portray a rural girl named Janaki, who serves as a temple treasurer. When I first heard the story in Hyderabad, I immediately felt connected to the character and said yes. This kind of story is rare and very relevant today. I appear in a completely traditional Telugu look, which I’ve never done before – including wearing a langavoni for the first time.”

Shooting memories in Rajahmundry

“We spent over a month filming in the scenic Godavari region. It was challenging yet unforgettable. We shot under intense heat, traveled in boats, and immersed ourselves in the environment. The beauty of the Godavari has been captured stunningly on screen – those days are etched in my memory.”

Working with Rajendra Prasad again

“I earlier worked with Rajendra Prasad sir in Bench Life. Sharing the screen with him again was an honor. His approach to emotional scenes – raw and without glycerin – taught me so much. Honestly, working on Shaashtipoorthi felt like being in an acting school. I learned every single day.”

Beyond just a celebration of 60 years

The title might suggest it’s only about a 60th birthday, but there’s so much more to the story. It touches on themes like family, love, responsibility, and tradition. And my character isn’t just a typical heroine –she has depth and multiple layers. I can’t reveal too much, but it’s a role I’m truly proud of.

Praising the team behind the film

Rupesh, who’s both the lead actor and producer, is extremely passionate about storytelling. He gave his all to the film. Our director Pawan Prabha has such clarity and vision  it’s rare to find someone so focused and detailed. Collaborating with them was a pleasure.

On career choices and aspirations

I’ve always aimed to be seen as a strong performer, which is why I choose roles carefully. Shaashtipoorthi aligns perfectly with that vision, and I believe it will bring me more appreciation. I’m open to web series and OTT platforms too – as long as the story and role resonate with me. If we’re sincere in our craft, opportunities will find us.

Exploring new horizons

I want to experiment with all kinds of genres, especially action – which I’m currently working on. There’s also a Tamil project in the pipeline. I love Nani’s films, and I recently enjoyed watching Amaran.

A message to the audience

The music of Shaashtipoorthi is emotionally rich. Every song conveys a unique feeling, thanks to Ilaiyaraaja sir’s timeless compositions. This is a film for families  one that reminds us to cherish our parents and the time we have with them. During the shoot, I often thought of my own father and missed him deeply. Please, take your families and go watch Shaashtipoorthi. It’s a film made with love and heart  one that will stay with you.
