Dilruba Offers a Unique and Fresh Love Story-Director Viswa Karun
During a recent media interaction, director Viswa Karun shared insights about the film and his journey into filmmaking.
A Passion for Cinema Turned into a Dream Project
I grew up in Tadepalligudem and Bhimavaram, where my love for cinema began. Watching films on the big screen sparked my passion, and I was always drawn to storytelling. Alongside movies, books have also played a significant role in shaping my creative vision. My journey into the industry started when a friend introduced me to a film project called Naladamayanti, but unfortunately, it never materialized. Later, I had the opportunity to work on Jaguar, written by Vijayendra Prasad garu, and also contributed to writing projects under Dil Raju garu’s banner."
My association with Kiran Abbavaram began when I pitched him a story idea. Though he didn’t connect with my first script, he appreciated my storytelling approach and encouraged me to come back with a stronger concept. When I narrated Dilruba, Kiran immediately agreed and said, ‘Brother, we are doing this movie.’ That moment marked the beginning of our journey with Dilruba."
Kiran Abbavaram’s Unwavering Support
Kiran garu’s support throughout this project has been incredible. As a firsttime director, managing everything can be overwhelming, but he constantly motivated me, saying, ‘Take your time, brother. Make a good movie.’ He never interfered with my direction, allowing me complete creative freedom. Every filmmaker fears not meeting expectations, especially after setbacks, which is why we paid extra attention to every detail. While we made some refinements along the way, the essence of Dilruba has remained unchanged.
A Different Take on Love and Relationships
In modern culture, we’ve easily adopted phrases like ‘sorry’ and ‘thank you,’ but in Telugu culture, seeking forgiveness is often difficult. The protagonist of Dilruba, Sidhu, played by Kiran Abbavaram, is a man who stands firm in his beliefs. He faces life’s challenges headon, but his uncompromising nature sometimes creates conflicts. After a breakup, Sidhu doesn’t just move on—he treats his ex as an adversary. However, before love, there was friendship, and even after parting ways, checking in on an ex isn’t always wrong. This emotional complexity is one of the core themes explored in Dilruba.
Some comparisons have been made to the recently released Dragon, but I want to clarify that Dilruba is an entirely different film. While love stories may share common elements, it’s the unique treatment and fresh perspective that make each one special. Dilruba offers audiences a distinctive take on romance.
Sam CS, despite his busy schedule, composed a fantastic soundtrack that perfectly complements the film. The background score will be one of the film’s highlights. I consider Bhaskarabhatla garu my guru, and his lyrics have beautifully enhanced the film’s songs. In urgent situations, I also contributed to writing lyrics. Stories are inspired by reallife people and emotions, and the title Dilruba immediately felt right for this film—it had a certain charm and resonance.
Dilruba actually went on floors before KA, but due to the involvement of actors from multiple industries, scheduling delays pushed its release. Both Rukshar Dhillon and Kathy Davison play pivotal roles, and their performances will be a treat to watch. Initially, we planned to set the film in Vizag, but after discovering the stunning locales of Mangalore, we decided to shoot there instead, enhancing the film’s visual appeal.
As a writer, my focus is always on creating a compelling script before moving on to my next project. With Dilruba set to hit theaters on March 14th, my immediate priority is ensuring its success. Once the film is out, I will shift my attention to my next venture.
With its fresh perspective on love, an engaging narrative, and mesmerizing music, Dilruba is poised to offer audiences a unique cinematic experience this Holi.
