Missterious Movie Review: A Slow-Burn Mystery That Embraces the Dark

In a season crowded with content-heavy big releases, Missterious quietly carved a space for itself even before hitting theatres. Marketed as a suspense thriller, the film generated curiosity through its promotional material, further amplified by legendary comedian Brahmanandam’s presence at the pre-release event. Without relying on star power, Missterious places its confidence in mood, mystery, and narrative progression.

Starring Rohit Sahni, Riya Kapoor, Meghana Rajput, Abid Bhushan, Balaraj Vadi, Rajamouli (of Jabardasth fame), and Gaddam Naveen, the film attempts to blend investigative drama with psychological tension. Music director ML Raja and cinematographer-editor Paravasthu Devendra Soori work together to create a dark, unsettling atmosphere. Released today, Missterious gradually sheds its thriller skin to reveal unexpected horror elements.

 Story

The story kicks off with the unexplained disappearance of Kondapur Sub-Inspector Ramkhi, also known as Ram Kumar (Abid Bhushan). The investigation is taken over by ACP Anand Sai (Balaraj Vadi), a disciplined and sharp officer who begins connecting dots that don’t seem obvious at first glance.

His probe leads him to architect Virat (Rohit Sahni) and his wife Shilpa (Meghana Rajput), whose calm exterior hides more than it reveals. Why did the missing SI visit Virat’s villa? What role does Missira (Riya Kapoor) play in this mystery? And what chain of events truly led to Ramkhi’s disappearance?

Through interrogations, fragmented flashbacks, and narrative misdirection, the film slowly transitions from a conventional investigation into a darker psychological space, ultimately flirting with horror.

 Performances

Rohit Sahni delivers a restrained and effective performance, handling emotional and tense sequences with maturity. Riya Kapoor emerges as a surprise package, commanding attention and playing a pivotal role in shaping the mystery. Meghana Rajput brings credibility to her character, balancing vulnerability with inner conflict.

Abid Bhushan leaves a strong impression despite limited screen presence, while Balaraj Vadi fits perfectly into the role of ACP Anand Sai, portraying authority without exaggeration. Rajamouli breaks away from his television-comedy image and proves his range with a serious, layered role. Gaddam Naveen’s brief appearance blends seamlessly into the narrative.

That said, the lack of well-known star faces may affect the film’s wider commercial pull.

Technical Aspects

ML Raja’s background score is one of the film’s strengths, effectively heightening tension and reinforcing the horror-driven moments, particularly in the latter half. The limited number of songs helps maintain narrative momentum.

Paravasthu Devendra Soori’s cinematography succeeds in creating an eerie visual tone through controlled lighting and shadow-heavy frames. However, the editing could have been crisper in places, as a few scenes linger longer than necessary.

Production values are decent and well-aligned with the film’s modest scale, ensuring the film never looks undercooked.

Verdict

Missterious works best when it takes its time, allowing the mystery to unfold organically. The interval point and final reveal are thoughtfully executed, and the gradual shift toward horror adds a refreshing layer to the storytelling.

While uneven pacing and limited mass appeal hold it back slightly, the film stands out as a sincere attempt at genre blending.
