What followed was one of India’s toughest investigations a 90-day pursuit where a small team of officers faced dangerous conspiracies, shifting alliances, and the raw pain of a nation in mourning.

Bringing this intense and rarely seen story to life is The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case, releasing July 4 exclusively on Sony LIV. Directed by National Award-winner Nagesh Kukunoor and inspired by Anirudhya Mitra’s acclaimed book Ninety Days, the series dives deep into an investigation that gripped the country.

Central to this story is D.R. Kaarthikeyan, the officer who led the Special Investigation Team. Portraying him is renowned actor Amit Sial. “Playing a real person like Mr. Kaarthikeyan is an honour and a huge responsibility,” Sial shares. “It’s not just acting it’s about reflecting the strength of a man who faced unimaginable pressure and kept going.”

But this is more than a political thriller. It’s also a powerful look at the emotional scars left behind. Speaking about one of the most unforgettable moments in the series, Sial recalls, “There’s a scene where Kaarthikeyan goes to the blast site. There’s no body, only a large patch of dried blood. That image haunts you. It’s not just the loss, but the absence of closure that shakes you.”

The series features a stellar cast including Sahil Vaid as SP Amit Verma, Bagavathi Perumal as DSP Ragothaman, Danish Iqbal as DIG Amod Kanth, Girish Sharma as DIG Radhavinod Raju, and Vidyut Garg as Capt. Ravindran of the NSG. Supporting them are Shafeeq Mustafa, Anjana Balaji, B. Sai Dinesh, Shruthy Jayan, and Gouri Menon in key roles.

Emotional, gripping, and deeply human, The Hunt goes beyond the headlines to tell the story of those who bore the burden of finding the truth and giving a nation the answers it desperately needed.
