Shashtipoorthi is a Film That Touched My Soul” – Dr. Rajendra Prasad

Natakiriti Dr. Rajendra Prasad: “Shashtipoorthi is a film that truly touched my heart”

Veteran actor Dr. Rajendra Prasad is back in a lead role with the upcoming film Shashtipoorthi. The film is directed by Pavan Prabha and produced by Rupeysh under the MAA AAIE Productions banner. It features Archana, Rupeysh, and Aakanksha Singh in key roles and is all set to release on May 30. At the pre-release event held recently, Dr. Rajendra Prasad opened up about the film, his journey, and more.

How do you feel about your role in Shashtipoorthi?

I’ve been in the industry for 48 years, and I’m thankful to the audience and media for always supporting me. I’ve played many roles, but this film gave me a deep sense of satisfaction. I can say with full confidence that Shashtipoorthi will be a great film. It’s the kind of story that stays with you.

What makes the film so special?

This is a story that feels like it belongs in every Telugu home. It reflects our values, our culture, and our emotions. We wanted to do the first event in Amaravati, but due to some issues, we held the trailer launch in Vijayawada instead. But no matter where it started, the film’s message will connect with everyone.

How do you see the changes in filmmaking today?

Things have changed a lot since I first started producing films. Back then, we didn’t have the technology we have now, but we also didn’t have as many distractions. Even today, I don’t watch the monitor after a shot. I leave that to the director. Technology should support good content. I’m happy that Telugu cinema has now reached an international level.

What do you think about the theater shutdown issue?

Decisions like closing theaters should be made collectively. Unfortunately, the way this issue was communicated wasn’t right. That’s why Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan garu took it seriously and ordered an inquiry.

You mentioned you’re also doing an English film?

Yes, I acted in Quick Gun Murugan, and it even plays on Emirates flights. They’re planning three parts, and the second one is starting soon. Some scenes will use AI. They even asked me to act in standalone scenes. If my presence adds value, I’m always ready to be a part of good work.

How did this story personally connect with you?

Children don’t witness their parents’ wedding, but they can experience their 60th wedding anniversary. That’s why this story is so powerful. Films like Shashtipoorthi carry meaning and emotions that should not be missed.

You’ve played many roles over the years. What keeps you going?

Art is like an ocean. You can’t swim across it or drink it all, but the thirst never ends. In this film, I had to show three different age phases. The director wanted something close to my Ladies Tailor look and voice. Thanks to my experience, I was able to deliver it well.

What about the music in the film?

Ilaiyaraaja garu gave us beautiful music. He worked hard to give his best. Keeravani garu even wrote a song for the film, which surprised Raja garu. Lyricist Chaitanya Prasad also gave us meaningful words. Music is one of the strongest parts of this film.

Do you remember any turning points in your early career?

When I was new, NTR garu once asked me what made me different. I had no answer. I thought about it for a whole week. Then I watched Charlie Chaplin films and realized everyone was trying to be a romantic or action hero. I decided to focus on comedy. That choice shaped my entire career.

How do you look at success today?

I never worried about how much money I had. I always asked myself if I was happy with the work I was doing. I acted in 12 films a year and earned well, but I also lost that money. Still, I never regretted it. Even today, I have 11 films on hand and a few more in discussion. I’m grateful I still get meaningful roles.

What will people feel after watching Shashtipoorthi?

They will laugh, they will cry, and they will feel emotional. I believe everyone will want to go home and hug their parents after watching it.

How was it working with Archana again after so long?

Archana and I acted together in Ladies Tailor. After many years, we’re finally working together again in Shashtipoorthi. We didn’t meet or work together all these years, but this film brought us back. It feels like destiny.

What do you think about comedy in today’s films?

Good comedy is missing in today’s cinema, and the main reason is weak writing. In our time, writers were brilliant. I always believed in clean, meaningful humor. My scenes with Vennela Kishore in Robin Hood were appreciated. After Aha Naa Pellanta, I wondered if I’d ever get something that good again. I hope today’s filmmakers bring strong comedy back.

Shashtipoorthi is a film about love, family, and legacy. With Dr. Rajendra Prasad leading the story, audiences can expect an emotional and memorable experience on May 30.
